Welcome to Tyng Primary School

Welcome to Tyng Primary School. Our faculty and staff are eager to prepare students for productive lives of work and learning. Our core business is the development of academic excellence among the children we serve. We are proud of our accomplishments, and we look forward to further success as our children grow in knowledge and in skill.

In 2003 Tyng School joined the Illinois State Board of Education in the national Reading First initiative. Teachers have received extensive training in the delivery of instruction in the area of reading, and student progress is monitored closely to determine the effectiveness of instruction. We teach reading through five research-based concepts: phonemic awareness (recognizing the sounds of language: early childhood), phonics (understanding the letter-sound relationship: grades K—2), vocabulary (learning and using new words), comprehension (understanding what is read: grades 1—5), and fluency (word recognition is easy and automatic: grades 1—5). Be sure to ask your child’s teacher about these five concepts and about ways in which you can help your child grow.

We have created the following teams to address our Action Plans: Communication, Technology, Students’ Social Interactions, Environment/Staff Development.  Please feel free to contact our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Carolyn Nunn, or me to learn more about our proud history on Peoria's South Side.
